Universal Design Advice...

Picture
Accessibility has long been a term that described adding a separate set of building elements to meet the needs of people with disabilities; creating an approach which segregates and discriminates by its very nature. Universal Design, as espoused by The Center for Universal Design, represents a paradigm shift in the design and usability of buildings and products alike. A shift focused on the needs of all users and the benefits of engaging user experiences and knowledge directly. Universal Design should be a dynamic process and not a standard set of antiquated codified requirements.

Let us talk to you about the concept of Universal Design and how it may be of benefit to your project.

Existing Building Audits & Due Diligence Reports...

Ensure that your building does not discriminate against people with disabilities and gain invaluable feedback in how to improve the usability of your building for all occupants and visitors; people with sensory and mobility issues right through to parents with prams and service people.
Don't commit to a building purchase which may expose you to unnecessary legal risks under the Disability Discrimination Act (1992). Ensure your investment meets the spirit and intent of the relevant legislation and can be managed appropriately.

Livable Housing Australia Assessor Services...

Picture
Livable Housing Australia (LHA) was formed in 2011 as a partnership between community and consumer groups as well as government and industry. The Livable Housing Design Guidelines were consequently developed and promoted. The aim of these are to produce homes which are easier and safer to use for all occupants inclusive of people with disabilities, older people, people with temporary disabilities and families with young children.

LHA have since established a system of accreditation of homes under their published guidelines. Once accredited, the LHA quality mark can then be used by the developer to assist with the marketing of their project.

Functional Access Solutions is an LHA Registered Assessor and can provide assistance in gaining LHA accreditation for your residential project.

Disability Discrimination Action Plans...

Picture
Developing Action Plans, as recognised under the Commonwealth Disability Discrimination Act 1992, is a proactive way of not only seeking compliance with the act but can also be a powerful business development activity. Developing and implementing a suitable action plan can enhance corporate image and extend products and services to a broader market.

In the context of an aging population, planning to meet the needs of as wide an audience as possible will be a critical ongoing activity to all types of business.
